Adult Education

"Talmud Torah k'neged kulam - Study of Torah is equal to a life of mitzvot." (Talmud, Shabbat 127a)

Kol Ami is a community of learners. As a congregation, we are dedicated to providing ongoing opportunities for Jewish learning for all, regardless of previous knowledge.

Highlights include:

  • Our weekly Torah Study (see below);

  • Our annual Scholar in Residence Weekend, which brings top scholars from all over the continent to teach our congregation;

  • An ongoing Friday night lecture series: Held the first Friday of nearly every month. Past topics have ranged from the March of the Living to the principles of Hinduism to Reform Judaism in Israel;

  • The “Open Doors, Open Minds” lecture, in which we invite leaders of other religious groups to teach us about their traditions and beliefs;

  • Sunday Brunch programs on a variety of topics;

  • The Rabbi’s monthly Lunch and Learn classes, which delve deeply into texts in an accessible yet meaningful way.

Each year, we offer a variety of quality learning opportunities, from captivating speakers, to relevant and intriguing classes, to our highly-attended annual Scholar-in-Residence program.

See the synagogue calendar for upcoming Adult Education opportunities.

Weekly Torah Study

The Kol Ami community gathers for a vibrant Torah study session every Shabbat morning at 9:00 (except during the summer; please check the calendar). Led by Rabbi Streiffer, participants of all generations are invited to join in spirited discussion and debate as we delve into the weekly Torah portion and its commentaries, finding new meaning in ancient texts. This is one of the best attended weekly Torah study classes in York Region, and there’s even breakfast!

No Hebrew or previous knowledge is necessary. Visitors are always welcome, and there is no need to call first.
