Confirmation

Confirmation or Kabbalat Torah (Receiving Torah) is an important group experience for teens in Reform Judaism.  Having attained a level of maturity beyond that of the 13-year-old Bar or Bat Mitzvah, students spend the year studying the Jewish principals of faith and exploring their own beliefs and actions as emerging Jewish adults. Confirmation at Kol Ami takes place as part of the teen Hadracha program.

At the end of the school year, Confirmands lead the Shavuot evening service for the congregation. Here they demonstrate their skills in liturgical leadership as shlichei tzibur - Leaders of our Community. They share their thoughts about the process and experience of Confirmation and read from the Torah. The parashah for Shavuot is the Ten Commandments and the revelation at Sinai, with which Confirmation has been historically connected.
